The Ashelmans have a longstanding interest in the environment. During the 80’s, when Randall was a winner of the First National Passive Solar Design Competition, they helped design and/or build over 30 passive solar homes. Their interest continued during their 9 years in Austin, Texas, where Randall did the planning and project management of a 1,000 acre community with energy efficient features, and mentored University of Texas solar car design team. In 1989, Randall became business manager for the state-of-the-art solar car manufacturer on the Big Island of Hawaii. He returned to West Virginia in 1992 to work on family businesses including the innovative Whiting’s Neck Farm Estates on the Potomac near Shepherdstown, WV, and Coolfont Resort, a resort, conference center and spa, a favorite among environmentalists.
